Basecamp has some sweet functionality but the ability to have it all stored on our servers...beautiful!!!

37Signals could have upped the features in the free version of Basecamp a long time ago and chose not to. It's only a matter of time before all of their software, chat, project management, contact management, etc. is a commodity. They are just trying to make a buck while they can.

I used the beta of ac and I have to say it was pretty well done. I am eagerly awaiting the release this summer.

As a paying subscriber of BC I have been looking for an alternative (even if I had to pay more) for a long time. The fact that 37s is so vocal and opinionated on their site is rather obnoxious and every time I see that charge on my card it annoys me. I guess for me it's personal, but I can't wait to move over to a new system.

37 will never lose their market share. It's just a fact. Not everyone is a network admin, not everyone can install an app in PHP5, and not everyone cares to learn how to do it. BC is a simple, hosted app. The people that complain about paying a few $ a month probably have no business in the first place and maybe a free solution is better for them. I think everyone giving things away for free online is starting to make people even cheaper than they were. An ipod is $200. Are you going to buy one or wait for the free version?

Basecamp is not going anywhere. It doesn't cost $149/mo to get a good version of Basecamp for your business, and the cost of running your own server, maintenance time, and design/development costs are probably going to make the price difference negligible in the first place.

37 were smart in releasing the api and now there are many tools that can be used with the system making it much more valuable for the same price.

Has anyone tried quickbase.com or SapphireSteel as pm tools? Curious to see how they stack up. 37s Basecamp leaves a lot to be desired for a app you have to pay for.

What you win on pineapples you lose on coconuts. My clients prefer Wrike.com
